I agree, but while offering advice to people in general I'd say "God" instead of Jesus. There are people who never read the bible but still believe in God.

As Christians, we shouldn't go around trying to get people to understand concepts. God is not a concept, he's the central part of nature. When you tell people "You'd better understand a concept so that you can go to heaven" what they're hearing is "He's going to heaven and I'm not."

He didn't miss the wedding, he successfully avoided an engagement that had absolutely zero value to him, and at which he would have been expected to be a spectator instead of the spectacle.
