It probably depends on which "Basic Computer Games" book. The C64 is the most popular fo the 3 you mentioned. And if you use an emulator (e.g.
https://vice-emu.sourceforge.io/ or a TheC64
https://retrogames.biz/) it'll run in either C64 or VIC20 modes. Though I don't know why anyone would *choose* to program a VIC20 over a C64.
So I guess I would suggest you use an emulator, then you can use whichever is most appropriate for the book/chapter/section that you're learning from.

The C64 is going to likely have the most community support of anything in that Era, with possibly the Atari A8s reasonable second place, unless you're in the UK, in which case the Sinclair will have a larger userbase.

If you have the Creative Computing books, I think those sources were originally for a BASIC interpreter for a DEC minicomputer.
My experience trying to resurrect old BASIC games is that each interpreter has it's own quirks so you will have to massage the code to some extent no matter what BASIC system you want it to run on.

The C64 also has more specialized audio and video features (sprites, for
example.) These can be accessed through poke and peek commands to their
hardware addresses.

The TRS-80 version of BASIC computer games is specific for the TRS-80.
If you don't have a TRS-80, then the BASIC Games for Microcomputers is the book
to use.
But that version of BASIC computer games programs in BASIC to the "lowest
common denominator" and won't use any of the
features in the C64, PET or VIC. It will treat your screen like a glass
teletype (no clear screen, no color, no cursor
positioning) and no sound other than basic beep (i.e. print chr$(7) which is
ASCII BEL - a teletype's bell).
... Sure I can help you out! Which way did you come in?

If you want to play games then you should buy a console and the best one is
play station 5. If not for gaming then stick to your pc. A have both and my
play station is for triple-A games and especially Sony exclusives. The pc is
for the world and online games. I play league of legends on my pc and I wish
that online gaming will be available on consoles because I hate that I always
have to buy different items for my pc. 2 weeks ago my monitor broke and I had
to buy a new one. After some searching, I found a website
https://10roar.com/
that had reviews on the best monitors. I chose the best option and it arrived
today. I can easily say that this monitor is really good and that it will last.

"The pc is for the world and online games" - Not sure what you mean. There are plenty of good PC games that don't need to be played online (as well as good online games). I've actually tended to be more of a PC gamer than a console gamer, and there are lots of good games for PC.

I was pretty sure online gaming is a thing on consoles? I thought all modern consoles these days connectd to the internet, and I thought there were multiplayer online games for consoles?

Is there a specific book you're reading or you just want to dink around in
Basic?
The C64 is what I grew up with. It was extrememly popular and therefore you'll
get the most support there.
However the basic is kind of crap actually. Almost anything you want to do
with the hardware requires a complex series of peeks and pokes whereas other
systems (Apple II, TI-99/4a (extended basic), even TRS-80) had basic commands
like graphics, plot, sound, joystick, etc...
The basic on the C128 has a lot more commands so there's that.

Di> Is there a specific book you're reading or you just want to dink around

I assume the book "BASIC Computer Games" by Ahl.
There were a few variations of the book for the TRS-80, C64, etc. But if it's
just the basic (he, he) one, then any BASIC will do since the games were
intended to be used for (shall we call it) Common BASIC, which just about every
computer at that time supported.

Ya, that had to do with many things, but mostly cost. So add graphic/sound
commands to BASIC on the C-64, for example, they'd have to go back to Microsoft
and get a new license, which they didn't want to do for cost purposes. Or have
their programmers spent a great deal of time, which they didn't want to do,
again for cost purposes.
The programs in "BASIC Computer Games" will run on just about any
implementation of BASIC from the Altair through GW-BASIC on the IBM-PC.

You can get Simon's Basic for the C64, I had alot of fun with that as a kid. It extends the C64's basic command set.
