30 super carry
From

Any thoughts on this newly annouced cartridge?
My EDC is a .40 Shield and I have been interested in
swapping to a micro 9 to get the much higher capacity...
My wife has a SIG 365 XL w/a Romeo Zero, so whatever
I get I want it to have a flat trigger and a plate
for red dot. I finally put my hands on a Taurus G4
yesterday and a Shield Plus. After carrying the
Shield, the Shield Plus 'felt' better than the Taurus,
so I am leaning that way...
I like my wife's SIG, but the Shield fits my hand a
little better. Then today, Smith annouces on Twitter
that the link to the 30 super carry pistols, including
the Shield Plus holding FIFTEEN rounds and the EZ
holding 10. I'm highly impressed! :-)
... Yes, but you're taking the universe out of context.

I think that's a smart move.

My opinion is that the Shield is a FAR superior gun.

I'm also interested in the Shield Plus in this caliber. Currently I'm
using the Shield Plus in 9mm, which holds 10 rounds in the small
magazine and 13 in the large. I only carry it with the smaller mag
though. My only concern is the comparison between ballistics on the 9mm
vs the 30 Super Carry ... I've always believed, for example, that the
.380 is underpowered for carry use and would never use one. The 30SC
has a lighter bullet and decent speed, so the energy is close to the
9mm, and it might be the sweet spot in that regard. Going to wait a bit
and read up on real-world usage and reviews on the caliber.
Another possible contender is the brand new S&W 'CSX' pistol which is an
all-steel hammer gun, even smaller than the Shield, and also in 30SC...

Yeah - hard to beat the quality... I'm not a Taurus hater,
and I think it's fine for its price, but I'm leaning
toward the Smith...

I actually carry the .40 with the 7 round magazine - the larger one. It
fits my hand better and keeps my pinky from falling off. LOL

I won't say I would NEVER use one, but I agree that I'd rather carry
something heavier. I've thought about the .380 LCP Max as a 'pocket'
gun when it's not where I can easily carry the Shield.
That being said, the 30SC has been compared to the .327 Federal Magnum,
and I received an email today where Taurus has annouced a snubby revolver
in that chambering!

I'd like to have my .40, a 9mm Plus and a 30SC Plus side by side and shoot
all thee of them, but that's not likely to happen. :-)

Hmm... I missed the fact that it's going to be available in 30SC - thought
it was 9mm only! Will be going to check that out now...
Gun show in Jackson, TN tomorrow. Hadn't planned to go, just because most
stuff is still way over priced, but I'm thinking about going just to see
some stuff. :-)

Ooops, my mistake. Just checked and it is indeed only 9mm.

I haven't looked into any reviews on the new cartridge, but it looks like ligh
t, fast bullet. 100 grain at 1215fps. 12 rds fitting in the space 10 rounds
of 9mm take up. Choice of defensive projectile shouldn't be too hard.
Regarding reloading, I wonder if the 110gr bullets used for reloading .30
carbine would work for plinking ammo?

Maybe they will though - would be a good platform!
LCP Max - wonder if that would too? Or maybe too much power for
that little frame...

Yeah - wife is not the outgoing type, and crowds make her nervous.
She's offered to go, but I don't want to drag her there, and I don't
want to pay good money and then have to rush through. :-)

Pistol cartridges are easy to start with. Since there is no bottleneck to wor
ry about, you can buy carbide dies and not worry about sizing lube.
First step is to resize and de-prime. A cartridge's diameter is less than the
chamber diameter in order to fit. When fired, the case diameter will expand
a little to un do the slight crimp placed on the projectile when fired. it
must be re-sized to factory specs. It gets placed in a die with an expander
ball, so the inside and outside are set. A de-priming pin is on the end of
trhe expander ball, which pushes out the primer via the flash hole.
Next step I do is clean with a tumbler. The tumbler uses a media such
as ground corn cob or crushed walnut hulls with a bit of polishing compound
to remove oxidation and other grit from the outside of cases.
Next stp is belling the mouth of the case. When a case is re-sized, it is
slightly under-sized, so the projectile will barely fit. Belling the mouth
opens it slightly to allow the bullet to fit without scraping the case mouth.
Next step is priming. A primer is a small cup which consists of a cup and
anvil in which which the explosive priming compound sits. Striking the cup
with the firing pin will pinch it against the anvil, setting off the primer.
if it is new brass the primer pocket might need a crimp removed. Otherwise
the tool pushes it in easily.
Next in the powder charging stage. A powder measure and scale are used to
measure the amount of powder as indicated by the manual. it is poured into
the case with a funnel.
Once filled, it is time to cap the case with a bullet, and seat and crimp
with the seating die.
Bottleneck cartridges like most rifles shoot require the case to be lubed in
order to be inserted in the die and push back the should of the case, then
trimmed afterwards to remove any worked brass that may have stretched. if
the case is too long it may cause chambering problems or push on the bullet
and create pressure issues when firing. The sizing die needs to be removed
afterwards, so a cleaning stage is required rather than being optional.
Straight walled pistol cases do not stretch as much, if any.

<snipped lots of GREAT info!!!>
WOW! Thank you! Since I've not done any loading, I wasn't sure what all
would be required... I've been saving the .45 Colt brass from my wife's
Judge, in the event that I load some 'cowboy rounds,' so sounds like
those would be decent to do as well (straight walled).
Thank you for the info! Gave me a lot to chew on!

The RCBS Rebel Plus reloading kit has all you need to start. A scale is
important, and the cheaper kits do not come with one. Well, Lee has a kit
with ascale which is cheaper, however the RCBS press and equipment is better
built. I have some Lee items and they'll do the job, but the RCBS stuff
feels more solid and will last longer.

Okay - went to a local show last month and 'put my hands' on a
CSX finally - too small for my hands...
The same table had an M&P full size 9mm with a flat trigger and
an optics plate! Now THAT felt good!!!
